Blogger is ceasing FTP support

I got an email today stating that Blogger will stop supporting the FTP services for blogs. This is a bit concerning, given that I belong to the apparently only 0.5% of users who host a blog through FTP on their own domain.

I am not exactly sure what this will entail for my blog, but the email claimed there will be a way to maintain the blog under my own domain, and this will be shared end of February.

If this move will improve the convenience of writing and maintaining my blog, I am all for it, but I do worry that at least parts of the huge work I have spent on this blog in the last 5 years is at risk.

Keep your fingers crossed...

  • You might have noticed that my blog is hosted on my own domain.

All you need to do is create a DNS alias pointing www.kritzelecke.de to ghs.google.com. and tell blogger about the domain name to use in the administration panel.

This *should* not affect the existing content of your blog at all.

  • Of course, if you host anything else under www.kritzelecke.de (outside your blog), that will become inaccessible with this change, so you'd likely either want to use a different domain name for your blog (blog.kritzelecke.de), and add a redirect rule in your web server to send everything for /blog/* to blog.kritzelecke.de, so you don't lose links already indexed by search engines.

Or, alternatively, you create another domain name (stuff.kritzelecke.de ?) and point that at the IP you currently use for www.kritzelecke.de.

Turning off FTP support in blogger is actually a good thing as all FTP passwords are transmitted in clear-text.

  • Okay, I will have to read this a few more times before I understand it... :)
